Receiving his BFA at the Philadelphia College of Art and his MFA at the Tyler School of Art, Joe Essig has received numerous prestigious awards and his work appears in many private and museum collections. “My prints show my relationship to the changing face of the Brooklyn waterfront, where I have worked among a community of artists and factory workers for over twenty years. I am drawn to subjects like the Brooklyn Navy Yard. As I study the area at a particular time of day, I see mysterious countenances stepping out of a different age. My etchings utilize a la poupee inking and interpretive wiping to create abrupt contrasts and atmospheric effects to create dramatic moments.”
